8 Days in the South Island: Wine, Glaciers and Milford Sound
Updated: Sep 29
Want to see the South Island without planning every step yourself? This 8-day tour covers wine country, wildlife, a famous train ride, glaciers and Milford Sound in one trip. Here's what each part of the week looks like.
Days 1 and 2: Marlborough wine country
You start in Blenheim, the heart of Marlborough, New Zealand's largest wine region. You stay in a luxury lodge, taste local wine and food, and enjoy a 3-course dinner by an on-site chef. On day 2 you head out on the Marlborough Sounds to spot dolphins, penguins and native birds.
Day 3: Kaikōura
A coastal drive takes you to Kaikōura, where the mountains meet the ocean. You visit the seal colony and ride the EcoZip zipline before continuing to Christchurch.
Day 4: The TranzAlpine train
The TranzAlpine crosses the Southern Alps from Christchurch to Greymouth. It's one of the most scenic train rides in the world. On the West Coast you stop at the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and end the day with a sunset in Hokitika.
Days 5 and 6: Glacier country
You see the blue-green water of Hokitika Gorge, walk the West Coast Treetop Walkway, and view Franz Josef and Fox glaciers. At Lake Matheson, on a clear day, the lake reflects Aoraki/Mt Cook.
Days 7 and 8: Milford Sound and Queenstown
Day 7 is a full-day trip to Milford Sound, with a cruise past sheer cliffs and waterfalls. On your last day you visit historic Arrowtown and That Wanaka Tree before flying home from Queenstown.
